End of an Era as Bovi and Nomzamo Mbatha Named Hosts for 12th AMVCA

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is entering a new chapter with the announcement of new hosts for its 12th edition. Organisers have officially unveiled Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha as co-hosts for the prestigious ceremony scheduled to hold at Eko Hotel and Suites on May 9, 2026.

The announcement marks a major transition for one of Africa’s biggest entertainment events, as longtime host IK Osakioduwa steps aside after more than a decade as the face of the show.

For many followers of the awards, the change is both exciting and emotional. Since the AMVCA began in 2013, IK Osakioduwa has become closely associated with the event, helping shape its identity through charisma, humour, and consistency.

IK Osakioduwa’s Lasting Legacy
From the very first edition, where he co-hosted alongside Vimbai Mutinhiri, to his recent appearance mentoring 16-year-old David Oke during the 11th edition in 2025, Osakioduwa brought a familiar energy that audiences came to expect.

His sharp wit, polished delivery, and ability to connect with celebrities and viewers alike made him one of the defining figures of the AMVCA stage.

For over a decade, many viewers considered him the heartbeat of the ceremony.
However, the handover had already been hinted at during the 2025 edition, where organisers signaled that a transition was coming.

That moment has now arrived.

IK Gives His Blessing
In a show of support and sportsmanship, Osakioduwa publicly congratulated the new hosts on social media.

He wrote:
“@officialbovi and @nomzamo_m Congratulations, guys. I know you’ll kill it. I’ll be cheering for you.”

His message was widely praised by fans who viewed it as a graceful endorsement of the next generation of AMVCA hosts.

Bovi Ready for the Big Stage
For Bovi, the appointment represents a major milestone in his entertainment career.
Though he has appeared on the AMVCA stage several times as a performer and comedian, taking over as lead host is a completely different responsibility.

Reacting to the announcement, Bovi said he was honoured by the opportunity and aware of the significance of the platform.

“The AMVCA stage is one of the biggest in Africa, and I don’t take that lightly,” he said.
He admitted the invitation came as a surprise, especially considering Osakioduwa’s long-standing role as host.

“I wasn’t expecting it. Considering IK has been the host from the beginning, I was really happy when I got the call.”

Bovi added that he hopes to bring energy, laughter, and memorable moments to the night.
“I want to bring the energy, the laughs, and the magic that this night deserves.”

Known for his sharp humour and stage confidence, many fans believe he is well suited for the role.

Nomzamo Mbatha Brings Continental Star Power
Joining Bovi is Nomzamo Mbatha, a selection widely seen as reinforcing the AMVCA’s pan-African identity.

Born in KwaMashu, Durban, Mbatha rose to fame through the South African drama Isibaya before gaining global recognition for her role in Coming 2 America.

She is also currently earning praise for portraying Queen Nandi in Shaka iLembe.

Beyond acting, Mbatha serves as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and is respected for her advocacy work across the continent.

Speaking on the hosting role, she described it as an honour to celebrate African creativity at a time when the continent’s storytelling is gaining international recognition.

“African storytelling is at an all-time high, and it’s an honour to be the one holding the mic while we celebrate the best of it.”

Her presence is expected to add elegance, global appeal, and a broader African connection to the Lagos-based ceremony.

AMVCA Expands in 2026
The 12th edition of the awards is not only introducing new hosts but also expanding its categories to reflect Africa’s cultural diversity.

Organisers announced two new award categories:

  • Best Indigenous Language (North Africa)
  • Best Indigenous Language (Central Africa)

The additions are seen as an effort to further recognise storytelling from underrepresented regions and languages across the continent.

It also strengthens the AMVCA’s position as one of Africa’s most inclusive entertainment platforms.

Joke Silva Named Head Judge
Another major development for the 2026 edition is the appointment of veteran actress Joke Silva as Head Judge.

Silva is one of Nigeria’s most respected film and theatre icons, and her appointment is expected to bring experience, credibility, and industry depth to the judging process.

According to organisers, the awards continue to celebrate stories emerging from cities such as Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar, and Johannesburg—stories that reflect Africa’s identity while connecting with global audiences.

A New Era for the AMVCA
The AMVCA has grown significantly since its launch in 2013, becoming one of the most watched and discussed award ceremonies in African entertainment.

It celebrates achievements in film, television, digital content, and performance while serving as a showcase for fashion, music, and celebrity culture.

The decision to hand hosting duties to Bovi and Nomzamo Mbatha suggests organisers are looking to blend humour, elegance, youth appeal, and continental relevance.

While IK Osakioduwa’s departure closes an important chapter, it also opens the door for a fresh era.
