The Federal Government has acknowledged the impact of economic hardship, rising living costs, and insecurity on Nigerian workers, describing the situation as one that affects families, communities, and national stability.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Muhammad Dingyadi, made this known on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration themed “Insecurity and Poverty: The Bane of Decent Work.” He said government is aware of the challenges confronting the workforce and is committed to addressing them.

“We acknowledge the weight of economic hardship, the rising cost of living, and the threats posed by insecurity,” Dingyadi said, noting that the recently implemented minimum wage is only a first step toward ensuring a living wage that reflects dignity and fairness.

He added that the Federal Government is working with labour unions and state governments to ensure full compliance with wage agreements.

On job creation, the minister said government is investing in initiatives across agriculture, technology, and infrastructure to expand employment opportunities, especially for young people.

Dingyadi also disclosed ongoing reforms, including the review of the National Employment Policy, strengthening of occupational safety standards, and measures to address child labour. He added that labour law reforms are in their final drafting stage at the Federal Ministry of Justice.

He further stated that Nigeria has joined international efforts on social justice through the International Labour Organisation’s Global Coalition for Social Justice, and is being considered for a coordinating role in the initiative.

On insecurity, he said government is collaborating with security agencies to protect workplaces and communities, stressing that safety remains essential for productivity.
