Guinea‑Bissau slides into fresh crisis after disputed election

ECOWAS has suspended Guinea-Bissau from its decision‑making bodies, hours after the military seized power following a contested presidential election. The suspension comes after soldiers ousted Umaro Sissoco Embaló and installed General Horta Nta Na Man as transitional head for one year.

The takeover unfolded just as provisional results of the election were expected with both Embaló and his top challenger, Fernando Dias, claiming victory. The military seized key institutions, closed borders, imposed a curfew and declared “total control” over the country.

The sudden power grab triggered a wave of regional and international condemnation. ECOWAS described the coup as “an illegal abortion of the democratic process,” while the African Union also denounced the subversion of constitutional order. Both bodies warned of possible sanctions and demanded immediate release of detained officials and restoration of civil rule.

Analysts warn that the latest coup further deepens Guinea‑Bissau’s chronic political instability, a cycle marked by repeated military interventions, fragile institutions, and interference from criminal networks.

For now, citizens remain in limbo: borders remain shut, political offices under military control, and conflicting claims over legitimacy. The fate of provisional election results and the return to civilian rule remain uncertain and the broader West African region watches closely.
