# INEC Confirms 2.3 Million Registered Voters for Osun Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 2,339,233 registered voters are eligible to participate in the August 15 governorship election** in Osun State.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figure during a courtesy visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi as part of a five-day inspection tour to assess the commission’s preparedness ahead of the election.

According to Amupitan, the registered voters will cast their ballots across 3,763 polling units located in *332 registration areas spread throughout Osun State’s 30 local government areas.

Describing the election as a major milestone ahead of the **2027 general elections**, the INEC chairman said the commission is committed to conducting a peaceful, transparent and credible poll.

He assured stakeholders that all necessary arrangements had been put in place to guarantee a free and fair election, stressing that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) would be used to verify voters before they are allowed to vote.

Amupitan emphasized that only properly accredited voters would be permitted to cast their ballots, adding that the commission remains focused on ensuring that the outcome truly reflects the will of the people.

He also appealed to traditional rulers across the state to support efforts aimed at maintaining peace before, during and after the election by encouraging politicians and their supporters to reject violence, vote-buying and other electoral offences.

Warning against election-related violence, Amupitan said no political contest is worth the loss of human life and urged all stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral process.

The INEC chairman further raised concerns over the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation, cautioning against the misuse of artificial intelligence and digital platforms to spread fake election results or misleading information capable of causing panic among the public.

In his response, the **Ooni of Ife**, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, commended INEC for engaging traditional institutions ahead of the election but expressed concern over the rising political tension in the state.

The monarch urged the electoral commission to remain impartial and ensure that the governorship election is conducted in a manner that is free, fair, peaceful and acceptable to all contestants and the people of Osun State.
