A Kano-based lawyer has presented ₦25.2 million in donated funds to the bereaved father of a family of seven who were killed in a banditry attack in the state, in a gesture of financial support and communal solidarity. The donation handover took place in Kano city on Saturday, 24th January reflecting community efforts to assist victims’ families affected by persistent insecurity in northern Nigeria.
The father, Haruna Bashir whose family was tragically killed during the violent assault that drew widespread attention across Kano and neighbouring states, received the funds from a group of well-wishers coordinated by the lawyer, whose identity was provided in the official ceremony. The total sum represented contributions from individuals and organisations moved by the circumstance of the killings and eager to provide tangible support to the grieving household.
At the presentation event, the lawyer said the donation was intended to ease the financial burden faced by the bereaved father including arranging proper burial rites and meeting immediate needs while the community continues to advocate for improved security measures. Community members and local leaders described the response as a reflection of solidarity and shared concern over recurring violent attacks affecting innocent civilians in the region.
The incident that led to the deaths of the family of seven occurred amid a broader context of banditry, kidnappings and communal violence in parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups frequently target rural communities and highway travellers. The killings had sparked shock, public outcry and calls for stronger and sustained security responses from both state and federal authorities.
The donation ceremony also drew prayers and messages of support from religious and community leaders, who urged authorities and residents to work together to address the root causes of insecurity. Family members of the victims described the gesture as a welcome comfort amidst deep personal loss.
Officials and civil society advocates say incidents like this underscore the urgency of enhancing protective measures for vulnerable communities and investing in collaborative strategies that reduce the risk of violent attacks.
