Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has called for an immediate investigation into the killing of social media political commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu.
Kwankwaso described the killing as a “horrific attack” and urged the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf to constitute an investigative panel to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page late Wednesday, the former governor warned that failure by the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation could see the case reopened if the NDC wins the 2027 election.
He said an incoming NDC administration would launch a comprehensive investigation and take appropriate steps to hold anyone found responsible accountable.
Kwankwaso also called on the state and federal governments to strengthen the protection of opposition voices, stressing that freedom of expression remains guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
He expressed condolences to Dan Shagamu’s family, friends and followers, while demanding that the authorities ensure that the investigation into the killing is thorough and transparent.

Dan Shagamu, a 54-year-old father of six, was reportedly found dead inside his home in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
His death has generated outrage in the state, with concerns raised over the safety of journalists, political commentators and other outspoken voices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Amnesty International has also condemned the killing, warning about growing threats against journalists and commentators.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the incident.
The command said investigations are ongoing and assured that the suspects would be arraigned in court upon completion of the investigation.
The development has renewed calls for authorities to thoroughly investigate the killing and ensure that those behind the attack face justice.
