The Labour Party has announced a revision of its timetable for the 2027 general election primaries, shifting all nomination contests to Saturday, May 30, 2026.
The adjustment affects earlier scheduled dates of May 27 for governorship and state assembly primaries, and May 29 for presidential and National Assembly primaries, which will now be conducted on the same day.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party said the decision was taken to avoid clashes with major national and religious observances.
According to the party, May 27 coincides with the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration, while May 29 marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected officials across Nigeria, making both dates significant in the national calendar.
The Labour Party explained that merging the primaries into a single date would ensure wider participation by aspirants, delegates, and party members without conflicting with important public events.
It added that the move also demonstrates sensitivity to Nigeria’s religious diversity and democratic milestones, stressing the importance of inclusiveness in its internal electoral process.
The party expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the change and appealed for understanding from its members and stakeholders.
Party officials say the new schedule is aimed at improving coordination, reducing logistical pressure, and ensuring a more efficient and transparent primary election process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
