The Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) has announced that the long-awaited revival of the national Basketball Premier League is finally underway, following positive progress in sponsorship negotiations.
NBBF President Musa Kida revealed the update during the National Sports Festival in Benin City, assuring basketball fans that the federation is determined to restore the domestic league’s prestige and consistency.
“The discussions we are having now are very promising,” Kida said. “We want to build a structure that ensures the Premier League can run smoothly and sustainably for years to come.”
According to the federation, preparations are being made for both the men’s and women’s divisions, as well as the lower-tier Division One and Two Championships, which serve as feeders for the elite competition.
The Premier League has been inactive for several years due to sponsorship disputes and administrative challenges. Its revival is expected to strengthen local player development and restore Nigeria’s dominance in African basketball.
The NBBF has also committed to implementing reforms aimed at ensuring transparency, improved officiating, and fair competition. Clubs across the country have been directed to begin registration and pre-season training ahead of an official relaunch date, expected to be announced soon.
