The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared full support for the ongoing indefinite strike by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), describing the action as justified in response to alleged violations of workers’ rights and administrative failings by the FCTA management.
In a statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and released in Abuja on Friday, the labour body said it reviewed a formal petition from the Joint Unions Action Congress (JUAC) — which represents FCTA employees — and determined that the industrial action over unpaid wages, promotion arrears and alleged administrative abuses is legitimate.
The NLC accused the FCTA of illegally withholding five months of wage awards, failing to remit pension contributions and National Housing Fund deductions since May 2025, and imposing intimidatory tactics against workers, including alleged restrictions on phone use and harassment of union activists.
Describing the strike as a necessary mobilisation of labour resistance, the NLC has directed all its affiliate unions within the FCT to fully align and intensify participation in the industrial action. It called on workers to mobilise en masse to the National Industrial Court on January 26, 2026, where hearing on related disputes is scheduled, and urged daily prayer and solidarity sessions to strengthen collective resolve.
The congress framed the action as a broader struggle for workers’ dignity, warning that failure to address the grievances swiftly may lead to further escalation.
The strike — declared earlier by JUAC — has already disrupted operations in several FCTA offices and public services in Abuja, underscoring tensions between labour unions and the FCTA administration over statutory obligations and employee welfare
