The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that Eric Chelle will remain head coach of the Super Eagles, dismissing speculation about an imminent change in leadership ahead of key competitive fixtures.
The statement on Monday 26th January clarified that Chelle’s tenure as manager of Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team will continue as planned, reinforcing confidence in his leadership and strategic vision.
Chelle was appointed head coach as part of the ongoing process to rebuild the Super Eagles and steer the team through a demanding schedule of tournaments, including AFCON 2025 qualifying campaigns and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup cycle.
The NSC Director-General’s affirmation has been welcomed by supporters of continuity in the technical bench, particularly as the Super Eagles strive for cohesion and tactical consistency.
This development follows a period of intense media speculation and fan debate about coaching leadership, notably after mixed results in recent friendlies and competitive draws. However, the NSC’s position underscores institutional support for Chelle’s project and the belief that stability at the helm will benefit Nigeria’s football prospects.
Officials emphasised that decisions on technical appointments are informed by long-term strategic goals, competitive assessments, and the requirement to build a team capable of competing at the highest levels internationally.
Nigeria’s vibrant football community, including pundits, former internationals and supporters groups, have been actively engaged in public discussions about team performance and coaching structures, reflecting the national team’s prominent role in the country’s sporting identity.
Chelle’s continued leadership signals a broader commitment by Nigeria’s football authorities to maintain consistency in technical management while working toward improved results on the African and global stage.
