Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has voiced strong optimism about the re-election prospects of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, stating that the outcome is already tilted in the president’s favour.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Okpebholo attributed his confidence to Tinubu’s performance in office and the policy decisions undertaken since assuming leadership.
“President Tinubu has made a landmark for this country and this election is already as good as won. His work and policies are speaking for him,” he said.
The governor dismissed the strength of opposition figures and ongoing political realignments, insisting that Tinubu’s victory remains inevitable. He further alleged that elements within the opposition are exacerbating insecurity across the country to discredit the federal government ahead of the elections.
“It’s the opposition that are using these people. They want Nigerians to say the president is not doing well,” he claimed, describing the situation as politically motivated.
Okpebholo also pointed to the defection of several governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as evidence of the president’s growing popularity.
“If the president is not doing well, I don’t think all those governors will move to APC. He’s the most popular person right now in Nigeria,” he added.
Reaffirming his commitment to deliver substantial electoral support from Edo State, the governor expressed confidence in grassroots backing for the president.
“You were on the streets you saw the people. They are the votes. Everybody is coming out to vote for Asiwaju,” he said.
He also attributed the APC’s performance in Edo State during the 2023 presidential election to what he described as governance shortcomings under the previous administration, referencing the victory of Peter Obi in the state.
Addressing concerns about a potential coalition among opposition parties, Okpebholo downplayed its significance, stating that such alliances would ultimately be ineffective.
“There will always be opposition. The Bible says they must gather, but they will scatter,” he remarked.
The governor further defended Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, describing the move as a bold and necessary decision.
“There are tough decisions taken by this president that no one has been able to take. Let’s talk about subsidy removal who had the courage to do that?” he said.
Okpebholo concluded that Tinubu’s track record in office would ultimately determine the outcome of the 2027 election.
