Sudan’s ambassador to the United Nations has called for urgent global action against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), accusing the paramilitary group of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in the ongoing conflict.
Speaking during a UN Security Council session in New York, Ambassador Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith demanded tougher international sanctions and a formal investigation into what he described as “mass atrocities and ethnic cleansing” carried out by the RSF in Darfur and other regions.
The envoy cited recent reports of mass killings, rape, and the burning of entire villages, claiming that the RSF’s actions “amount to genocide.” He urged the Council to refer the situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
While several members of the Security Council expressed concern, divisions remain among world powers over how to respond. Russia and China have called for “restraint and dialogue,” while the U.S., France, and the UK pressed for accountability.
The UN has documented widespread human rights abuses since the conflict erupted, displacing millions and triggering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
