President Bola Tinubu has congratulated 14-year-old Adeolu Oreofe for emerging winner of the 2026 African Spelling Bee Championship in the junior category, following an impressive performance at the continental competition held in Harare.

Adeolu, a student of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, defeated contestants from more than 20 African countries to claim the prestigious title. Her victory also earned her a $5,000 educational scholarship, further highlighting the significance of the achievement.

The President’s congratulatory message was conveyed in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

National Pride and Academic Excellence
President Tinubu described Adeolu’s victory as a proud moment for Nigeria and a clear demonstration of what can be achieved through commitment to learning, discipline, and perseverance.

According to the statement, the President said the young champion’s success reflects the value of sustained investment in education, literacy, and youth development.

He noted that her triumph goes beyond personal accomplishment, adding that it has brought honour to Nigeria on the continental stage while serving as motivation for millions of young Nigerians.

Tinubu stated that Adeolu’s story should inspire students across the country to pursue excellence in academics and self-development, regardless of the challenges they may face.

A Journey of Persistence and Determination
The President also praised the teenager for her resilience, noting that she did not allow previous setbacks to discourage her ambition.

Her path to becoming African champion was marked by steady progress over several years of competition.

According to the statement, Adeolu finished second in the 2023 MTN Spelling Bee. She also came second in the 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee.

In 2025, she placed fifth at the African Spelling Bee competition and later finished second at the Nigeria Spelling Bee.

Rather than becoming discouraged by near victories, she continued to improve until eventually securing first place at the 2026 continental championship.

The Presidency described this progression as evidence of determination, consistency, and the power of perseverance.

Recognition for Parents, Teachers and Mentors
President Tinubu extended commendation not only to Adeolu but also to those who supported her journey.

He applauded her parents, teachers, and mentors for providing the guidance, encouragement, and discipline needed to nurture her talent.

According to the President, such achievements are rarely accomplished in isolation and often reflect the collective support of family, educators, and institutions committed to excellence.

The recognition of her school, St. Lawrence Metropolitan College in Ado Ekiti, also places the spotlight on the role educational institutions play in preparing young Nigerians to compete globally.

Government Commitment to Education
President Tinubu used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.

He said the Federal Government would continue to create opportunities that enable Nigerian youths to compete and excel internationally.

The President stressed that investment in quality education remains essential to national development, innovation, and future competitiveness.

He added that empowering young people through education would help unlock Nigeria’s vast human potential and position the country for long-term progress.

Inspiration for Nigerian Youths
Adeolu Oreofe’s victory has been widely celebrated as another example of the brilliance and talent among Nigerian youths when given the right support.

Her journey from repeated runner-up finishes to becoming continental champion demonstrates the importance of persistence, self-belief, and continuous improvement.

Education stakeholders say her achievement also highlights the growing relevance of academic competitions in promoting literacy, confidence, and healthy intellectual engagement among students.

For many young Nigerians, Adeolu’s success offers a powerful message: setbacks do not define the future, and determination can turn disappointment into victory.
