President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), signalling a renewed push to consolidate reforms in Nigeria’s power sector. The decision follows the Senate’s confirmation of approved nominees on 16 December 2025 and was announced in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Dr. Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni, a long-serving commissioner who previously held the role of vice chairman, was appointed as Chairman of NERC, with his tenure set to run through the completion of a ten-year term under the Electricity Act, 2023. He has been part of the commission since January 2017, giving him deep experience in regulatory oversight.
Dr. Yusuf Ali was named Vice Chairman of the board, with other reappointed and newly appointed commissioners including Nathan Rogers Shatti, Dafe Akpeneye, Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, Dr. Chidi Ike and Dr. Fouad Animashaun. Animashaun, an energy economist, comes with extensive experience in the power sector, including leadership roles in state electricity regulation.
President Tinubu has charged the reconstituted board to deepen and consolidate ongoing transformation efforts in the electricity industry, aligning regulatory action with the goals of the Electricity Act, 2023. This is part of broader policy efforts to improve electricity access, encourage investment and enhance sector performance as Nigeria continues to address longstanding energy challenges.
