Togo Removes Visa Requirements For All Africans

Togo has announced the removal of visa requirements for all African nationals, allowing citizens across the continent to enter the country without a visa for stays of up to 30 days, provided they hold a valid passport.

The policy, announced by Togo’s Ministry of Security, is being described as a major step toward strengthening African integration and promoting free movement across borders. It applies to all entry points, including land borders, airports, and seaports.

Under the new arrangement, travellers will still be required to comply with standard immigration, security, and public health checks. They must also complete an online travel declaration at least 24 hours before arrival to obtain an entry slip for presentation at border posts.

The government says the reform is aimed at positioning Togo as a hub for trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchange within the African continent.

Officials added that the policy does not override existing immigration laws, particularly regarding illegal entry or overstaying, which will still attract penalties under national regulations.

The move places Togo among a growing number of African countries adopting more open-border policies in line with the African Union’s free movement agenda. Countries such as Rwanda have also implemented similar visa-free entry arrangements for Africans in recent years.

Previously, only citizens of West African states under the ECOWAS free movement protocol enjoyed visa-free access to Togo. The new policy now extends that privilege to all African countries, marking a significant shift in regional travel policy.

Analysts say the decision could boost tourism, improve business mobility, and strengthen diplomatic and economic ties across Africa, while also increasing Togo’s visibility as a regional gateway for commerce and investment.
