11 Killed As Vehicle Falls Off Ogun Bridge

At least 11 people have died in a tragic road accident at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos highway in Ogun State, raising fresh concerns over road safety and reckless driving on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.

The fatal crash occurred late Sunday night and involved a lone gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, the vehicle reportedly lost control, somersaulted several times, and plunged off the bridge.

Officials said all 11 occupants of the vehicle — 10 adult men and one woman — died at the scene after becoming trapped inside the vehicle when the doors locked on impact. Rescue teams from the FRSC Itori Unit Command, alongside local residents, responded immediately to the incident and worked through the night to recover the victims from the wreckage.

The bodies were later evacuated to the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

The Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, said preliminary investigations suggest the crash may have been caused by overloading and driving under the influence. He warned motorists, especially those travelling at night, to avoid speeding, reckless driving, and alcohol consumption while behind the wheel.

The accident has once again highlighted the persistent dangers on major highways across Nigeria, particularly during night travel when visibility is reduced and fatigue often affects drivers. Road safety experts continue to call for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, routine vehicle checks, and improved public awareness campaigns to reduce the rising number of fatal crashes.

Authorities have also expressed condolences to the families of the victims as investigations into the incident continue.
