Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on political leaders and Nigerians to embrace maturity, tolerance and patriotism as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections, warning against inflammatory statements that could threaten national unity and stability.
Speaking after Eid-el-Kabir prayers at Ramat Square Eid Ground in Maiduguri, Shettima said Nigeria’s diversity must be protected through responsible political conduct and mutual respect among citizens.
He assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is implementing economic reforms and targeted interventions aimed at reducing hardship and stabilising the economy.
“Governments at all levels are working to ameliorate the sufferings of the Nigerian people,” he said, urging citizens to remain patient and supportive as reforms take effect.
The Vice President stressed that political competition must not be allowed to degenerate into conflict, noting that what unites Nigerians is greater than what divides them.
“As we enter the political season, we must show maturity, forbearance and generosity of spirit. We must avoid actions capable of overheating the polity,” he added.
He also called on Nigerians to continue praying for peace and stability across the country, while highlighting global conflicts, including tensions in the Middle East, as a reminder of the importance of national unity.
Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving security, expanding economic opportunities and strengthening social welfare programmes.
The Eid prayers were attended by top government officials, including the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur; Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari; lawmakers and other senior officials.
