Suspected kidnappers have killed two people and abducted several others during a deadly attack on Ayegunle Bunu community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday when heavily armed gunmen reportedly stormed the community and blocked the major highway connecting the area to neighboring towns. Residents said the assailants opened fire indiscriminately, throwing the community into panic as people fled for safety.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the gunmen arrived at about 2:25 a.m., with the sound of gunfire awakening residents. Two persons were killed during the attack, including a pastor who was reportedly shot in his residence and a passenger travelling through the area. Several others sustained injuries.
According to community sources, the attackers also abducted two residents from their homes, while a number of travellers in commercial vehicles were seized after unknowingly driving into the highway blockade set up by the gunmen.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to determine the exact number of victims kidnapped and assess the full extent of the attack.
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the incident, stating that the armed men blocked roads leading in and out of Ayegunle Bunu before carrying out the abductions.
Police operatives have since been deployed to the area, while investigations are underway.
Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi assured residents that security agencies are working to track down the perpetrators and rescue the abducted victims.
