An eight-month pregnant housewife, Halima Yusuf, has approached the Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, seeking confirmation of divorce from her husband, Isah, over allegations of domestic violence and neglect of family responsibilities.
In her petition before the court, Yusuf accused her husband of repeatedly beating her and failing to provide basic necessities, including food, clothing, and healthcare. She told the court that the alleged abuse and neglect had made it impossible for her to continue the marriage.
According to her statement, the couple was married under Islamic law (Sharia), but the relationship had broken down due to what she described as persistent mistreatment and abandonment of responsibility by her husband.
Yusuf further informed the court that she is currently eight months pregnant and has been living with her parents in Mararaba for safety and support. She is seeking formal dissolution of the marriage and a court order compelling her husband to take responsibility for her pregnancy and related welfare needs.
The case highlights ongoing concerns around domestic violence and spousal neglect, particularly involving vulnerable expectant mothers, and has drawn attention to the role of family courts in protecting the rights and welfare of women in marriage disputes.
Presiding over the matter, Judge Mohammed Yakubu adjourned the case to June 11 for further hearing, allowing both parties to present their positions before a final determination is made.
The court is expected to consider evidence from both sides regarding the allegations as proceedings continue.
