Sir Mascot Kalu, a leading aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Abia State, has officially withdrawn from the race following consultations with family members, party stakeholders, and supporters.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Kalu said his decision was guided by considerations of fairness, equity, and internal family political dynamics.
He explained that his withdrawal was influenced in part by the fact that his brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has already secured the party’s senatorial ticket, noting that stepping aside would allow other aspirants a fair chance at the governorship contest.
Kalu also stressed the importance of respecting the zoning and rotation arrangement in Abia State politics, stating that Abia Central should be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure cycle, which he said had already begun.
He described the decision as difficult but necessary, taken after wide consultations with political associates and community leaders.
Expressing gratitude, Kalu appreciated his wife, children, and mother for their unwavering support throughout his political journey. He also acknowledged his brothers, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Hon. Nnanna Uzor Kalu, for their encouragement.
He further commended members of his campaign team for their dedication, singling out key supporters who worked closely with him during the buildup to his governorship ambition.
Kalu’s withdrawal is expected to reshape the APC governorship contest in Abia State, as the party continues internal negotiations ahead of its primaries. Political observers say the development may strengthen calls for zoning balance within the state’s power structure.
