The National Association of Nigerian Students, National Association of Nigerian Students, has elected Akinteye Babatunde of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, OAUSTECH, as its new national president at its 2026 convention in Abuja.
Akinteye, a former Senate President of the association, emerged winner after a keenly contested election involving five candidates held at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja, succeeding outgoing president Olushola Oladoja.
The convention was conducted under tight security from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, Department of State Services, and was widely described as peaceful and well-organised by delegates.
In his acceptance speech, Akinteye thanked delegates for their confidence and pledged to prioritise student welfare, unity, and stronger engagement across campuses nationwide. He said his administration would ensure that the association remains active and responsive to student concerns.
He also praised the peaceful conduct of the election, describing it as one of the most orderly conventions in the history of the student body.
Outgoing president Olushola Oladoja congratulated the new leadership, expressing confidence in Akinteye’s capacity to lead and sustain progress within the association.
According to the convention planning committee, over 300 delegates from student unions across Nigerian universities participated in the election, which featured candidates from several federal and state institutions.
Officials say the outcome marks a new phase for NANS, with expectations of stronger advocacy for students’ welfare and educational reforms nationwide.
