The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has advised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to take firmer control of his administration and ensure that individuals undermining government authority are decisively dealt with.
Sanusi gave the counsel during his traditional post-Eid Sallah homage visit to the Government House in Kano, describing leadership as a balance between justice and firm authority. Quoting from the Qur’an, he referenced the symbolism of “iron” as a representation of power, stressing that justice alone cannot be effective without enforcement.
He commended Governor Yusuf’s efforts in expanding education, healthcare, and social welfare programmes in the state, but warned that excessive tolerance toward disruptive elements could weaken governance and encourage misconduct.
According to him, public perception suggests the governor has been overly patient in handling political and social disorder in the state. He urged Yusuf to assert the presence of government authority, adding that law-abiding citizens should live in peace while those who break the law must face consequences.
Sanusi also reaffirmed the support of the emirate council, noting that the success of the governor’s administration is closely tied to the stability and progress of Kano State.
In his response, Governor Yusuf thanked the Emir for the visit and his counsel, while explaining the cancellation of the Hawan Daushe Sallah procession. He said the decision was taken to prevent possible violence and protect lives, citing past incidents linked to public processions.
Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to peace and stability, stating that he fears no one except God. He also acknowledged security concerns surrounding traditional Sallah celebrations, which have repeatedly been restricted due to tensions linked to the ongoing emirate leadership dispute between Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, a matter still before the courts.
