Nigeria’s academic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who passed away in the early hours of Saturday at the age of 68.

The distinguished veterinary medicine scholar, administrator, and education advocate reportedly died at his residence in Oloje Estate, Ilorin, a few months before his 69th birthday. Family sources disclosed that he passed away around 3 a.m. after attending the Isha’i prayer at a nearby mosque on Friday evening. According to relatives, the former vice-chancellor was not known to be suffering from any serious illness prior to his death.

His Janazah (Islamic funeral prayer) was scheduled to take place at his residence along Air Force Road in Oloje Estate, Ilorin, where family members, colleagues, students, community leaders, and sympathisers gathered to pay their final respects.

A Distinguished Academic Career

Professor Ambali leaves behind a remarkable legacy built over more than three decades of service in higher education, research, and academic administration.

Born on November 29, 1957, in Ilorin, Kwara State, he began his educational journey at Pakata Primary School before proceeding to Government Secondary School, Jalingo. His passion for science and animal health led him to study Veterinary Medicine at Ahmadu Bello University, where he obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1981.

Determined to advance his expertise, he later earned both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Veterinary Medicine from University of Liverpool, establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s leading scholars in the field.

His academic career began at the University of Maiduguri before he joined the University of Ilorin, where he steadily rose through the ranks of academia. Over the years, he distinguished himself as a lecturer, researcher, mentor, and administrator, eventually becoming a Professor of Veterinary Medicine.

One of his landmark achievements was serving as the pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ilorin, where he played a crucial role in building the faculty into a respected centre for veterinary education and research.

He also served as Chairman of the Association of West African Universities and was a Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria.

Throughout his career, he supervised numerous postgraduate students, mentored young academics, and published more than 80 scholarly articles in reputable peer-reviewed journals, making substantial contributions to veterinary medicine and scientific research.

In recognition of his contributions to education, research, and national development, the late professor was honoured with the national award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), one of Nigeria’s prestigious national honours.
