Stop-and-Search or Pay-and-Go?” Kaduna Police Launch Probe Into Viral Extortion Video

The Kaduna State Police Command has ordered a full-scale investigation into a viral video allegedly showing police officers demanding money from motorists and cyclists during a stop-and-search operation.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, directed that the officers seen in the footage be identified and invited for questioning.

In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, the police said any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions.

The command explained that routine roadblocks and stop-and-search operations have been curtailed, except in situations where credible intelligence indicates the movement of criminals, firearms or other prohibited items.

However, the police noted that the location featured in the viral video, a suburb of Millennium City, has previously been linked to criminal activity.

According to the command, security operatives had recovered 20 AK-47 rifles along the same route during previous operations.

Despite these security concerns, the Commissioner of Police maintained that officers must not use legitimate security duties as a means of extorting or harassing members of the public.

The command stated that officers found guilty of the alleged misconduct would face severe disciplinary and legal action.

The police also commended members of the public for their vigilance and encouraged residents to continue reporting cases of unprofessional conduct by police personnel.

Complaints can be made to the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) through 09049498983, 08075391105 and 07039675856.

The investigation is expected to determine the identities of the officers involved and establish whether the allegations captured in the viral footage are substantiated.
