The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced the creation of a comprehensive Support and Transition System designed to assist retiring and discharged officers in reintegrating into civilian life.
The new framework, unveiled at a military retreat in Abuja, aims to provide welfare services, post-retirement counselling, job placement, entrepreneurship training, and health insurance continuity for ex-service members.
Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, said the initiative underscores the Armed Forces’ commitment to the dignity and wellbeing of its personnel beyond active service. “Our officers dedicate their lives to national security; it is only right that the system protects them when they hang their uniforms,” he said.
According to Defence Headquarters, the program will also strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of Defence and private sector partners to offer veterans access to financial literacy and business incubation opportunities.
Military analysts have welcomed the policy, describing it as a forward-looking reform that will boost morale, reduce post-service hardship, and preserve institutional loyalty within the armed forces.
