Group donates Drone to Vigilante Group in Edo to check Kidnapping

In a major community-security initiative, the Uromi-based socio-cultural and non-governmental organisation Uromi Like Minds Initiative (ULMI) has donated a high-tech surveillance drone to the Esan Youths Awareness Vigilante Network, which operates in Uromi and its environs in Edo State, to support its anti-kidnapping operations.

ULMI’s security committee chairman, Mr. Matthias Igberaese, speaking on behalf of Executive Chairman Deacon Darlington Okpebholo Ray, said the gesture was designed to “strengthen local security operations and complement government efforts in the fight against crime.” He emphasised that the growing scourge of kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminal activities in Uromi had compelled the organisation to intervene.

The donated unit is a DJI Mavic 4 Pro (512 GB Creator Combo), equipped with imaging and navigation capabilities tailored for both day and night operations, with take-off altitude up to 6 000 metres and a range of about 30 kilometres. Its flight time is between three and four hours, weather permitting.

Barrister Andy Akpoka, patron of the vigilante network, received the drone and pledged that it would be used judiciously to enhance security patrols, surveillance and community-based crime detection efforts throughout the Esan land.

The donation comes amidst intensified government and community efforts in Edo State to curb insecurity. ULMI further commended the state government’s partnership and investment in intelligence-gathering and technology in the security sector, underscoring the necessity of citizen-led contributions to lasting peace.

Mr. Igberaese called on sons and friends of Uromi in the diaspora to consider joining ULMI’s mission and supporting further initiatives including scholarship programmes, medical outreach and infrastructure support in the community. The drone donation thus marks a notable step in community-driven security innovation in Edo State.
