The Kogi State Police Command has concluded an extensive two-month training programme for 565 newly deployed Constables, focusing on weapon handling, firearms safety, and marksmanship as part of efforts to strengthen internal security operations across the state.
The training, which began on April 13, 2026, was rounded off with a Passing-Out Parade held at the Command Headquarters in Lokoja. It is part of the broader capacity-building initiative of the Nigeria Police Force aimed at improving operational efficiency, professionalism, and public safety delivery.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, said the programme was designed to equip officers with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for the safe handling, maintenance, and effective use of firearms. He added that the training also emphasised discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights in the discharge of policing duties.
CP Kankarofi noted that the initiative aligns with the strategic vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which prioritises a professionally competent, service-driven, and community-friendly police force.
He explained that strengthening the capacity of young officers is essential to addressing emerging security challenges, particularly as the Nigeria Police continues to adapt to evolving threats such as armed banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
The Police Commissioner charged the graduating Constables to apply the knowledge gained responsibly, stressing that firearms issued to personnel are strictly for the protection of lives and property and must be handled with utmost discipline and restraint.
He commended the recruits for their dedication throughout the training period and expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for his continued commitment to personnel development and operational excellence within the Force.
CP Kankarofi also praised the instructors and facilitators for their role in ensuring the successful completion of the programme, noting that continuous training remains critical to building a more effective and responsive policing system in Nigeria.
Security analysts say such training programmes are vital in improving professionalism within the police force and enhancing public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
