Kano Local Government Revokes Private School Licences After Alleged Sexual Abuse Case

The Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State has revoked the operating licences of all private schools within its jurisdiction following allegations that a teacher sexually assaulted four female pupils at one of the schools.

The decision was announced in a statement by the Education Councillor of the council, Abdullahi Wakili, who said the action followed a high-level review meeting convened to address concerns around school safety, administration, and moral conduct within private educational institutions.

According to the council, the move is part of wider efforts to restore public confidence in the education system and ensure stronger safeguarding measures for pupils, particularly in private schools operating across the local government area.

Wakili disclosed that the chairman of Ungogo LGA, Tijjani Amiru Bilyaminu, has also ordered all private school owners within the area to appear before a screening committee for fresh evaluation and compliance checks before any consideration of renewed approval.

The development follows the closure of Al-Hadeed Private School in Inusawa community, where a teacher identified as “Uncle Kamal” was accused of sexually abusing four underage female pupils reportedly from the same family. The allegations sparked outrage within the community and prompted swift action by local authorities.

The suspect has since been arraigned before a magistrate court in Kano’s Nomansland area on charges of rape. He was ordered to be remanded in custody, with the case adjourned to June 9, 2026, for further hearing.

Local authorities say the sweeping decision to revoke licences is aimed at ensuring accountability within the private education sector and preventing future incidents of abuse. They stressed that schools must remain safe environments for learning, free from intimidation or exploitation.

The council also indicated that stricter monitoring mechanisms will be introduced going forward, including enhanced inspection of school facilities, teacher vetting processes, and compliance enforcement.

Residents and education stakeholders have continued to call for stronger child protection policies and improved oversight in both public and private schools to safeguard vulnerable pupils.
