Surveillance firm deploys “town criers” to protect trans-Niger Pipeline corridor

A private surveillance company called Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) has launched an innovative community-engagement programme to deter vandalism along the Trans-Niger pipeline corridor, deploying a network of local “town criers” who act as eyes-and-ears for early warning and public awareness. The firm said the initiative complements formal monitoring with grassroots intelligence that can quickly alert authorities to suspicious activity.

Under the scheme, trained community volunteers will coordinate with pipeline operators and security agencies, broadcast safety messages, and collect real-time reports on pipeline integrity and movement around sensitive stretches. Company officials stressed that the model is designed to reduce response times and to build trust between communities living near the pipeline and the operators responsible for critical infrastructure.

Industry experts note the approach could be replicated across other vulnerable energy corridors, provided it is accompanied by safeguards for volunteer safety, formal reporting protocols, and mechanisms to ensure information leads to timely, proportionate enforcement actions by authorities.
