Cholera Outbreak Claims 27 Lives In Borno, Over 2,700 Suspected Cases

A cholera outbreak in Borno State has claimed at least 27 lives, with authorities also recording about 2,715 suspected cases across five Local Government Areas.

Health data covering a 24-day period in May 2026 shows that the outbreak has spread rapidly, affecting communities in Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala, and Magumeri LGAs. Jere recorded the highest number of suspected cases with 834, while Maiduguri Metropolitan Council remains the epicentre with 1,568 cases.

Officials say the outbreak has spread across at least 29 wards and more than 120 communities, raising concerns about widespread contamination and weak sanitation systems in affected areas.

Of the 27 deaths recorded, 11 occurred in communities before patients could access medical care, while 16 were reported in health facilities. The Case Fatality Rate currently stands at about one percent, a level the World Health Organization considers a warning threshold for urgent intervention.

Medical workers warn that the actual number of infections may be higher, as reports from several treatment centres are still being compiled. They say the situation is worsening, with new suspected cases emerging daily.

Health officials have raised concerns over limited public awareness and delays in declaring a full-scale emergency response, warning that the outbreak could escalate further if urgent measures are not taken, especially with population movement expected to increase in coming weeks.

However, the Borno State Ministry of Health says it has not officially confirmed the figures, adding that it is still reviewing reports from the field.

Public health experts are calling for intensified hygiene campaigns, improved access to clean water, and rapid deployment of treatment and surveillance teams to contain the spread of the disease.
