A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area has temporarily stopped the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma-Odu, issuing an interim injunction restraining further action by the legislature. The order, granted on Friday, 16th January bars the Rivers State House of Assembly, its Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the Clerk of the House and the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, from taking any step connected with the impeachment pending the court’s further consideration of separate suits filed by the governor and his deputy. The injunction specifically restrains the Chief Judge from receiving, forwarding, considering or acting on any impeachment notice, request or resolution from the Assembly aimed at constituting an investigative panel to probe allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy. The injunction is set to remain in force for seven days as the matter returns to court for a hearing scheduled for January 23, 2026. Supporters of the Assembly’s impeachment move argue that legislative oversight is essential to constitutional accountability, while Fubara’s side contends the move lacks merit and has welcomed the court’s intervention.
