A federal court has ordered that former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending trial on fresh charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges relate to alleged fraud and criminal conspiracy connected to the misuse of public funds and foreign travel document violations, according to prosecution filings.
During proceedings, the prosecution argued that Malami poses a flight risk and could interfere with the investigation, prompting the judge to deny bail and order remand. The matter will return to court for further hearings, including evidence presentation and argument on whether trial should continue.
Supporters of the former minister have criticised the decision as politically motivated, while civil society and anti-corruption advocates have welcomed the move as a demonstration of the judiciary’s independence and willingness to address high-profile corruption allegations. The EFCC has not yet disclosed a full charge sheet to the public, and legal counsel for Malami has indicated plans to challenge the remand order in higher courts.
