FG Unveils Housing Roadmap, Targets 15,000 Homes Nationwide

The Federal Government has announced plans to unveil a comprehensive housing roadmap before the end of May as part of efforts to tackle Nigeria’s housing deficit and expand access to affordable homes through Public-Private Partnerships, PPPs.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma, disclosed this during the second edition of the Renewed Hope Housing PPP Summit in Abuja. He explained that the roadmap would provide a strategic framework for accelerating housing delivery nationwide through collaboration with private developers, financial institutions, state governments, and other stakeholders.

According to the minister, the new housing strategy is designed to support the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda by increasing home ownership opportunities, boosting economic activities, and creating jobs in the construction sector. He noted that consultations had already been held with agencies under the ministry to develop a practical implementation plan capable of delivering measurable results.

Darma revealed that several ongoing housing projects located in Ibeju-Lekki in Lagos State, Lambu in Kano State, and Karsana in Abuja are nearing completion and would be commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He added that the projects are expected to provide thousands of housing units for Nigerians while stimulating local economies through the engagement of artisans, engineers, contractors, and suppliers.

The minister also disclosed that the ministry, in partnership with the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, is currently delivering 1,550 housing units specifically for military personnel as part of broader efforts to improve the welfare of members of the Armed Forces.

He stressed that the government intends to scale up housing delivery using sustainable financing models and flexible mortgage systems that reflect the economic realities of ordinary Nigerians. Darma called on banks and mortgage institutions to develop affordable housing finance products to make home ownership accessible to low- and middle-income earners.

The minister further appealed to state governments to provide land and create enabling environments that would encourage faster and more efficient housing development across the country.

As part of transparency measures, Darma said the ministry would begin nationwide assessments next week to verify the availability and progress of housing projects. According to him, reports indicate that over 15,000 housing units may become available for occupation within the next three months.

If confirmed, he said the development could provide accommodation for more than 60,000 Nigerians based on an average family size of four persons per household. He described the initiative as a major step toward reducing homelessness and addressing the country’s growing housing challenges.

The minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to completing all ongoing Renewed Hope Housing Projects within set timelines and according to approved standards, while maintaining strong partnerships with the private sector to ensure long-term sustainability.
