Nigeria on Wednesday June 25th mourned the passing of one of its elder statesmen, Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, a former Governor of Kwara State and Minister of Communications, who died peacefully at the age of 84.
Adebayo was born on February 24, 1941, in Igbaja, Kwara State. He rose to prominence as a Senator under the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in 1979 and later became governor of Kwara in 1983 before the military coup abruptly ended his tenure. His national relevance was further cemented when he served as Minister of Communications during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
Reacting to the news, the Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, described Adebayo as “an administrator par excellence” in a condolence statement issued by his media aide, Dr. Abdulazeez Arowona. The monarch extended his sympathies to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Adebayo family, and the political community in Kwara.
Tributes have continued to pour in, celebrating the life of a disciplined and principled leader who left indelible marks on the state and the nation.
