Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reiterated that during his administration, the United States did not undertake any major actions in Africa without notifying Nigeria, highlighting the country’s longstanding role as a strategic regional player. Obasanjo’s remarks come amid recent statements by President Donald Trump regarding potential military intervention linked to alleged religious persecution in Nigeria.
Obasanjo emphasised that Nigeria’s position as a regional power requires respect for its sovereignty in international relations. He noted that cooperation with global partners should be framed by mutual consultation and shared strategic objectives. His comments underscore the importance of balancing external engagement with national priorities, while ensuring that diplomatic relations support security, economic development, and regional stability. Analysts suggest the remarks are aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s influence and credibility in global policy discussions.
