Four Soldiers Injured in IED Attack, Ambush on Damboa–Maiduguri Highway in Borno

At least four soldiers have sustained injuries after troops came under an improvised explosive device (IED) attack and an ambush along the Damboa–Kumala–Maiduguri supply route in Borno State.

Security sources say the incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, about nine kilometres from Kumala junction in Konduga Local Government Area, during a routine dominance patrol by troops of the 25th Brigade.

The patrol reportedly triggered a command-detonated explosive device planted along the route, after which suspected insurgents launched an ambush on the advancing troops.

Despite the attack, the soldiers were said to have fought through the ambush and maintained control of the situation.

Four personnel sustained varying degrees of injuries and were evacuated for medical treatment.

Reinforcement units from brigade headquarters, alongside an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, were immediately deployed to secure the area and clear possible threats.

During follow-up operations, the EOD team reportedly discovered and safely neutralised another suspected explosive device planted along the axis, preventing further casualties.

Security sources also confirmed that 89 civilian vehicles were escorted safely through the corridor, while 165 others were turned back to Damboa as a precautionary measure.

Military authorities say clearance operations are still ongoing to ensure the full reopening and safety of the strategic highway, which remains a key route linking communities in the region.

The latest incident highlights the continued threat of roadside explosives and ambushes along major supply routes in parts of the North-East, despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
