Fubara Challenges Lawyers To Resist Political Pressure, Defend Nigeria’s Democracy

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has urged lawyers and judges to remain courageous in defending the Constitution, protecting citizens’ rights and resisting attempts by political authorities to undermine the rule of law.

Fubara made the call at the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he stressed the important role of the legal profession in sustaining democracy.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Beyond Limits,” the governor described the legal system as a key foundation for the relationship between government, public institutions and private organisations.

He said the law must ultimately serve the interests of citizens by promoting equality, protecting fundamental rights and creating an environment where peace, security and economic development can thrive.

According to Fubara, society risks descending into disorder when democratic principles, good governance and respect for the rule of law are ignored.

The governor also called on judges to recognise the wider consequences of their decisions, insisting that justice delivered with integrity can strengthen law and order and contribute to national development.

He warned legal professionals against becoming political apologists or simply following the wishes of those in power.

Fubara said lawyers must have the “conscience, commitment and courage” to speak truth to power and defend the rights of ordinary citizens whenever political authority attempts to overstep constitutional boundaries.

He further described the courts as more than venues for resolving disputes, saying they should remain a trusted place where citizens can seek justice and protection.

Fubara Highlights Rivers Judiciary Reforms

Reflecting on his administration’s experience in Rivers State, Fubara said his government had faced significant political challenges but remained committed to the state’s peace, unity and development.

He also highlighted measures taken to strengthen the judiciary over the past three years.

According to the governor, his administration worked with Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, to increase access to justice through the appointment of additional judges and the creation of more courts.

Fubara disclosed that the state government had also constructed a new Federal High Court facility, which he said would soon be handed over to the Federal High Court.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the financial and administrative autonomy of the judiciary, while also promising improved security and welfare for judges.

Fubara maintained that an independent judiciary remains one of the strongest safeguards for democracy, constitutional governance and the protection of citizens’ rights.
