Italy announces new work permit plan to address labor shortages

Italy’s right-wing government has unveiled a new immigration plan aimed at tackling chronic labor shortages while tightening border controls.

Under the new policy, unveiled by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration on Monday November 3rd, Italy will expand legal work permits for foreign laborers in key sectors such as agriculture, construction, and elder care.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the plan balances “economic needs and national security,” ensuring that foreign workers fill necessary labor gaps without encouraging illegal migration.

Italy has faced mounting pressure from businesses warning of severe workforce shortages, especially in industries reliant on migrant labor. However, rights groups have cautioned that the plan must guarantee fair working conditions and avoid exploitation.

The announcement comes amid growing debate in Europe over how to balance labor demand with border control, as migration remains a politically charged issue across the continent.
