The high-profile trial of an Eritrean man accused of leading one of the world’s most violent migrant smuggling operations began in Italy on Monday November 3rd, drawing widespread attention across Europe and Africa.
Prosecutors allege that the suspect, identified as Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam, oversaw a network responsible for the torture, trafficking, and extortion of thousands of migrants attempting to cross from Africa into Europe through Libya.
According to court documents, victims were subjected to “inhumane detention conditions,” including beatings, starvation, and sexual violence. Survivors who failed to pay ransom were often killed or sold to other traffickers.
Italian authorities say the case underscores the need for stronger cross-border cooperation against organized human smuggling.
Human rights organizations have hailed the trial as a landmark step toward justice for victims, many of whom remain missing or unaccounted for.
