KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government has commenced the distribution of 90,000 bags of subsidised fertiliser to farmers across the state’s 44 local government areas as part of efforts to increase agricultural productivity and improve food security.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially flagged off the exercise on Thursday during the launch of the 2026 Gida-Gida Subsidised Fertiliser Distribution Programme, announcing that the fertiliser would be delivered using 150 trucks to reach farming communities across the state.
According to the governor, the initiative is designed to enhance crop production, create employment opportunities in rural areas and support farmers ahead of the planting season.
Farmers to Enjoy 50% Fertiliser Subsidy
Governor Yusuf disclosed that each of the state’s 44 local government areas would receive an average of three truckloads of fertiliser, while beneficiaries would be selected from all 484 wards across Kano.
He explained that about 70 farmers are expected to benefit from the programme in each ward.
The governor noted that the fertiliser, currently selling for about ₦50,000 per 50kg bag on the open market, would be made available to verified farmers at ₦25,000 per bag, representing a 50 percent subsidy jointly financed by the Kano State Government and the 44 local government councils.
Programme Targets Food Security and Rural Development
Yusuf said the intervention forms part of his administration’s broader agricultural development agenda, which has remained a key priority over the past three years.
He explained that investing in agriculture is essential to improving farmers’ livelihoods, strengthening food production and driving economic growth across the state.
According to the governor, the fertiliser programme aligns with the government’s long-term development blueprint aimed at modernising agriculture and reducing the cost of farming inputs.
Committees Set Up to Ensure Transparency
To guarantee a transparent and accountable distribution process, the governor announced the establishment of both state and local government monitoring committees.
The state committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Agriculture and will include representatives from key security agencies and anti-corruption institutions, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), civil society organisations, farmers’ associations and relevant government ministries.
At the local level, each committee will be headed by the respective local government chairman and include district heads, agricultural officers, security personnel, lawmakers and representatives of farmers.
Governor Yusuf expressed confidence that the oversight mechanisms would ensure that only genuine farmers benefit from the programme and prevent diversion of the subsidised fertiliser.
The Kano State Government says the initiative is expected to support thousands of farmers during the current farming season while contributing to increased food production and improved agricultural output across the state.
