A tragic incident unfolded in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where a woman was lynched and her body set ablaze by an angry mob over allegations of child theft that police later described as baseless.
The victim, identified by residents as a married woman and mother, was reportedly on her way to attend an Islamic lecture when some youths accused her of attempting to abduct children. Witnesses said the accusation spread rapidly through the community, drawing a crowd that attacked the woman before police officers arrived and rescued her.
According to residents, security personnel took the woman to a nearby police station for protection and investigation. However, the intervention failed to calm tensions, as hundreds of youths later gathered outside the facility demanding that she be handed over to them.
Despite efforts by officers to disperse the crowd and restore order, the mob reportedly overwhelmed security personnel, forced its way into the station, dragged the woman out of custody and set her ablaze. During the ensuing chaos, police fired warning shots in an attempt to contain the violence. One youth was reportedly shot, while several others sustained injuries.
Residents expressed shock and sadness over the development, insisting that the woman had committed no offence and was simply heading to an Islamic school when she was confronted.
“It is painful that mere accusations could lead to such a horrible death. She was a mother and a wife, and people who knew her said she was going for Islamic lessons. Instead of allowing the authorities to investigate, the crowd took the law into their own hands,” a resident said.
Another resident noted that recurring rumours of child abduction in the area had heightened suspicion among members of the community, creating an atmosphere of fear and mistrust that may have fuelled the violent reaction.
The spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the incident and described the allegation against the woman as fictitious.
He disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer of Maraban Jos received a distress call around 10 a.m. and immediately mobilised officers to rescue the victim. According to him, the woman was safely taken to the station for protection and further investigation, but an angry crowd later besieged the facility.
“The mob overpowered officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, killed her and set her body ablaze. This barbaric act is not only criminal but also a direct attack on the rule of law,” Hassan said.
The police spokesman revealed that several suspects had already been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other individuals involved.
He assured that a comprehensive investigation had commenced and vowed that all perpetrators would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The killing has sparked renewed concerns about mob justice and the dangers of spreading unverified allegations. Civil society groups and community leaders have repeatedly warned against taking the law into one’s hands, stressing that false accusations and rumours can lead to irreversible tragedies.
Observers say the incident underscores the need for greater public awareness, stronger community policing and swift action against those who incite violence. They also called on residents to report suspected criminal activities to security agencies rather than resort to self-help and mob attacks.
The Kaduna State Police Command urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading rumours and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out investigations, warning that anyone found culpable in the killing would face the full weight of the law.
