A top official has said the National Institute for Sports (NIS) under the leadership of Director Shaibu will be transformed into a national hub for athlete development, coaching education and sports science. The institute’s leadership outlined plans to modernise training curricula, strengthen sports science research, and create certification pathways for coaches and technical staff across disciplines.
The proposed reforms include upgrading laboratory and training facilities, launching technology-enabled talent identification programmes, and partnering with universities and international sports bodies to bring global best practice into Nigeria. The institute also plans to expand outreach to underserved states to ensure nationwide access to structured athlete development programmes.
Officials described the initiative as a long-term strategy to produce more competitive athletes for continental and global competitions, while creating professional opportunities in coaching, sports medicine and administration. The NIS said measurable targets and timelines will be published as new projects roll out.
