FirstBank has pledged renewed investment in grassroots and elite sport programmes across Nigeria, announcing a multi-year commitment aimed at supporting talent development, facility upgrades and community sporting initiatives. The bank said the programme will span youth academies, school sports, grassroots coaching clinics and selected elite competitions, with a view to strengthening the talent pipeline and creating broader participation opportunities nationwide.
The commitment, unveiled at a ceremony attended by sports administrators, athletes and bank executives, will include sponsorship of local tournaments, scholarship interventions for promising athletes, and partnerships with state sports commissions to upgrade training facilities. FirstBank officials said the bank will also deploy financial literacy programmes tailored for athletes, helping ensure winners have the financial skills to manage earnings and plan post-career pathways.
Stakeholders at the event welcomed the move as timely, arguing that private-sector funding is critical to bridging recurring gaps in sports infrastructure and athlete welfare. FirstBank emphasized that its approach will prioritise transparency, measurable outcomes and working with existing sports bodies to ensure funds and programmes reach intended beneficiaries.
