Popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40, according to tributes shared by colleagues on social media.
The news of his passing was confirmed on Tuesday by several industry figures, including Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Godwin Nnadiekwe, who expressed shock and grief over the development.
Funke Akindele described Ekubo as a close friend, saying she had tried to reach him before his death and would cherish their shared memories. Bolanle Ninalowo also mourned the actor, praying for strength for his family and loved ones.
Godwin Nnadiekwe said the Nollywood industry had “lost a rare soul,” adding that Ekubo had recently made preparations for his will, a detail that has deepened the emotional reactions among colleagues and fans.
As of the time of reporting, Ekubo’s family has not issued an official statement confirming the circumstances surrounding his death.
In recent months, fans had raised concerns about the actor’s wellbeing after he stepped away from social media for an extended period. His last absence from Instagram, beginning in late 2024, sparked speculation online.
A video that later surfaced showing Ekubo interacting with children drew mixed reactions, with many noting he appeared visibly slimmer and less active than before, further fuelling public concern.
Before his reported death, Ekubo was known as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actors, celebrated for his roles in romance and drama films, as well as his strong social media presence.
He had also been in the public eye due to his high-profile relationship with US-based model Fancy Acholonu, which ended after an engagement cancellation in 2021. The couple later made public statements reflecting on their breakup, drawing significant media attention at the time.
Ekubo had previously spoken about focusing on his career and financial growth, stating that he preferred to prioritise success in the entertainment industry over public pressure about marriage.
Tributes continue to pour in from fans and colleagues as the Nollywood industry awaits an official family statement confirming details of his passing.
