NURSES STRIKE HALTS MEDICAL SERVICES ACROSS KWARA STATE PUBLIC HOSPITALS

Medical services at both federal and state hospitals in Kwara State have ground to a standstill following a nationwide seven-day warning strike by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), which began July 30, 2025 .
Facilities including University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Sobi Specialist Hospital, and General Hospital Ilorin saw full compliance with strike directives. Patients were evacuated by relatives to private healthcare providers or home care, as nurses ceased administering medications or treatments, adhering to national union orders .
Kwara State Council joined the strike in solidarity, despite the state having recently implemented local wage increases. NANNM representatives cited unaddressed demands—like the creation of a dedicated nursing department within the federal health ministry, staffing shortages, and deteriorating work conditions—as justification for the indefinite protest. Nigeria has lost over 42,000 nurses abroad in the past three years, exacerbating crises in personnel numbers.
