British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing political pressure following a poor showing for the Labour Party in recent local elections, triggering fresh questions about his leadership and the future direction of the party.
The crisis has intensified after more than 80 Labour lawmakers reportedly called on Starmer to step down, while several junior ministers have resigned amid widening internal dissatisfaction.
The political turmoil comes as critics within Labour accuse the prime minister of failing to deliver fast enough on domestic reforms, while controversies surrounding key appointments have further weakened confidence in his leadership.
One major source of criticism has been Starmer’s decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Washington, a move that generated backlash because of Mandelson’s past links to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
At the same time, senior Labour figures appear to be rallying around Andy Burnham as a possible challenger to Starmer’s leadership.
Burnham, the popular Mayor of Greater Manchester and a former Labour leadership contender, is now being openly encouraged to return to Parliament ahead of a potential leadership contest.
Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting publicly endorsed Burnham, describing him as Labour’s strongest chance of rebuilding support and defeating political opponents in future elections.
To return to Parliament, Burnham would first need to contest a by-election in northwest England after a Labour MP resigned his seat to make way for him.
Labour’s National Executive Committee is expected to decide in the coming days whether Burnham can officially stand as the party’s candidate. If elected, he could then seek enough parliamentary backing to formally challenge Starmer for the leadership.
Another senior Labour figure, Angela Rayner, is also being viewed as a potential future contender after recently being cleared by tax authorities over an investigation into her finances.
The growing unrest highlights deep divisions inside the Labour Party despite its return to government. Analysts say frustration is building among lawmakers concerned about falling public support, economic pressures, and the rise of opposition movements.
Far-right politician Nigel Farage has also pledged to heavily contest any upcoming by-election, increasing the political stakes for Labour.
Political observers say the next few weeks could prove critical for Starmer’s future, as internal party battles, public dissatisfaction, and leadership manoeuvring continue to dominate British politics.
