Kaduna Farmers Warn Of Looming Food Crisis Over Insecurity And Rising Fertiliser Costs

Farmers in Kaduna State have raised concerns over a potential food crisis, warning that worsening insecurity and sharply rising fertiliser prices are threatening agricultural production ahead of the new planting season.

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kaduna State says many farmers can no longer safely access their farmlands due to repeated attacks by armed groups and kidnappers across several local government areas.

According to the association’s chairman, Nuhu Aminu, communities in Giwa, Kauru, Kubau, Kudan, Kajuru, Sanga, and Kachia are among the worst affected, with farmers abandoning their fields out of fear for their lives.

He said the situation has severely disrupted farming activities, as insecurity continues to force rural residents away from agricultural production, raising fears of a sharp drop in food output in the coming months.

Aminu warned that unless urgent security measures are put in place, Kaduna State could experience reduced harvests, higher food prices, and increased pressure on already vulnerable households.

Beyond insecurity, farmers are also struggling with the rising cost of chemical fertilisers, which have become increasingly unaffordable for many smallholder farmers who form the backbone of agricultural production in the state.

The AFAN chairman said the high input costs are limiting productivity and forcing some farmers to scale back cultivation or seek cheaper alternatives. While the association is encouraging the use of organic fertilisers, he noted that many farmers still lack access to sufficient resources and technical support to fully transition.

The association is calling on federal, state, and local authorities to urgently subsidise fertiliser and ensure timely distribution of farm inputs ahead of the peak planting period.
AFAN also urged government to strengthen agricultural security and provide targeted support to farming communities, stressing that agriculture remains a critical sector for employment, food security, and economic stability in Nigeria.
