Reps Ask FG to Reverse Removal of Civic, Computer Studies From WAEC Portal

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to reverse the removal of Civic Education, Computer Studies, Data Processing, Electrical Installation and other subjects from the WAEC registration portal, warning that the move could jeopardize students’ preparation for the 2026 WASSCE.

The call followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Oboku Oforji, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency, during Thursday’s plenary. Oforji argued that although curriculum reviews are necessary, the affected subjects remain crucial to national development and modern economies.

He noted that trade subjects like Data Processing are among the most popular in schools due to their relevance, while Computer Studies is essential for digital literacy—especially as examination bodies increasingly adopt computer-based testing. He also criticised the removal of Civic Education, formerly compulsory, saying it undermines citizenship awareness efforts by agencies like the National Orientation Agency.

Oforji warned that removing multiple core subjects reduces students’ options below WAEC’s minimum requirement of eight subjects, leaving some with only five. With the WASSCE just four months away, he cautioned that it is “academically impossible” for SS3 students to switch to unfamiliar subjects at this stage.

Lawmakers further expressed concern over widespread confusion among students nationwide, insisting that those already in SS3 must be allowed to sit the subjects they have studied since SS1.

The motion was approved via a voice vote presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. The House subsequently directed the Ministry of Education to immediately halt the implementation of the changes and set up an ad hoc committee to investigate and ensure compliance.
