Cristiano Ronaldo has given football fans his clearest indication yet that the end of his legendary playing career could be just around the corner.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain revealed in a recent Vogue interview that the 2026/27 season is likely to be his final year as a professional footballer.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.”
The revelation comes after more than two decades at the highest level, during which Ronaldo has established himself as one of the greatest players in football history.
Ronaldo Already Thinking About Life After Football
Ronaldo admitted that walking away from football would leave a major gap in his life after 25 years of dedication and sacrifice.
However, the Al-Nassr star said he already has plans for the next chapter, including travelling more, spending time with family and enjoying one of his favourite hobbies — padel.
He explained that he would need several activities to keep him occupied once his playing career comes to an end.
The 1,000-Goal Dream
One major milestone remains within Ronaldo’s reach.
The Portuguese superstar currently has 976 official senior career goals, leaving him just 24 goals short of 1,000.
Reaching the landmark before retirement would provide an extraordinary finale to a career already filled with records and trophies.
Ronaldo has won league titles in England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia, while also lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy five times. He has also won major international honours with Portugal.
A Legendary Career Nearing Its Final Chapter
From Sporting CP and Manchester United to Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr, Ronaldo has spent more than 20 years rewriting football’s record books.
His longevity has been remarkable, but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner now appears increasingly prepared for life away from the pitch.
For millions of fans around the world, the 2026/27 season could therefore become a farewell tour for one of football’s most recognisable stars.
And with 24 goals separating Ronaldo from 1,000, the biggest question may now be whether he can reach the historic milestone before finally calling time on his extraordinary career.
