South Africa declares national Disaster as Floods and heavy Rains kill 30

The South African government has formally declared a national disaster in response to severe flooding and heavy rains that have killed at least 30 people and displaced thousands across several provinces. The announcement on 19 January 2026 came as relief agencies and emergency services stepped up efforts to provide shelter, food and medical support to affected communities.

The most affected areas include parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Free State, where rivers have burst their banks and low-lying settlements have been inundated. Roads, bridges and homes have been damaged or washed away, prompting local authorities to issue evacuation orders for vulnerable residents. Authorities said that more rain is forecast in the coming days, heightening concerns about further flooding and hampering rescue and recovery operations.

The national disaster declaration unlocks additional funding and coordination mechanisms, allowing the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the South African Police Service (SAPS) and disaster management agencies to work together more effectively with provincial governments. President Cyril Ramaphosa pledged that the government would “leave no stone unturned” in supporting those affected and stressed the need for robust preparedness as climate-related weather extremes become more frequent.

Humanitarian organisations are also distributing food parcels, clean water and temporary shelter materials to displaced families, and health teams are monitoring waterborne diseases that can follow flooding events. Officials urged residents in flood-prone areas to heed warnings and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions stabilise.
